about the project...

'The Suicide Shop' is a family business that, for generations, has been selling the equipment to successfully commit suicide. The family business flourishes until the moment the youngest son of the family, Alan, is born. And then everything changes. What happens to the family and the business when Alan takes action?

This play intrigued me from the first moment Nikos Andriyannakis gave it to me to read in the summer of 2013. Why did it intrigue me? It's full of people who have history, desires, weaknesses and strong characters, unconventional and determined. In other words, alive. But mostly alive in their own surreal reality.
I thought I could manage them and bring them to life. With my choreography as my weapon, to bring them into a real environment, where the audience, we everyday people, could easily and through dance, song and prose - which in this work the text is the power - endure our own reality.

A reality full of anxieties, problems, dysfunctional ideas but above all a reality full of anger for ourselves, for others, for life, for a society that lifts some up and brings others down.

I have to tell you that if you approach this project with sentimentality and seriousness, you've lost the ball. Therein lies the secret. In the characters in the play I have recognised myself and I have even identified with some of them.

A play of dark comedy - it doesn't get any darker than that - with incredible bright spots.Dark and at the same time so tender, because thanks to its uniquely poignant humour, it allows you to talk about death and life directly and lightly. You can change your reality directly and lightly, make decisions and live.

A theatrical adaptation of the novel by JEAN TEULÉ, translated/theatrical adaptation by Marios Simeonidis, based on an idea by Marina Mavrogeni.
